I've been mislead. All these years I thought earwax was made equal, but according to a trusted doctoral candidate (thanks J.) it's not. There are apparently two types: a wet and a dry. This really shouldn't matter except I've discovered black q-tips whose entire purpose (for those with the latter) are to swab your ears and then have the grody satisfaction of seeing what you've cleared out. Genetics & needless Japanese invention are COOL.
