view from a cab
On Wednesdays I take a cab from the train station to a shipbuilding company where I teach a couple of evening classes. It's a good example of the delicate and sometimes awkward (perhaps only to a foreigner) relationship between customer and servicer. The ride begins with a welcome from a door ajar, it closes automatically after your seated. A destination request is made followed with an attempt of small talk in a marbled local drawl. Silence. Some zippy driving (manual transmission with a column-mounted shifter?!) A smoky smile and the door magically opens. You've arrived.
